Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to join the celebration of Software Freedom Day 2010 held at University Of Baguio. It's a whole day event spearheaded by 8Layer Technologies with the help of sponsors, speakers and the University Of Baguio. Software Freedom Day (SFD) is an annual worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The SFD events was designed to highlight the importance and benefits of open source technologies. It encourage everyone to use FOSS and discover its values to share to the community.
The central theme of the event for this year SFD celebration by 8Layer Technologies is “Change NOW For FREE”. There are lots of keynote-speakers who shared their time, effort and knowledge for FREE. They discuss different technical and social issues on using FOSS. Mr. Macoy Mejia shared his experience using FOSS in creating one of the largest call center in the Philippines. Congressman Teddy Casino of Bayan Muna party list wasn't able to join the event physically but still manage to send a video regarding the topic “FOSS Bill Updates”. Frederic Muller of the Software Freedom International also sent a video message of congratulations through Mr. Allan Caeg of Gnome Asia.
Other topics focus on educating the attendees about the existence of FOSS and its real essence to the community. Some of attendees think open source or free software just mean "Linux" and “it's for the geeks”. This event increased their awareness about open source beyond the code and the geeks. It gives way to a more open minded and knowledge seeking individual to be part of the FOSS community.
Other notable part of the celebration was the variation of topics from Technical to Business Tracks, wherein attendees are FREE to choose what topic they want to attend. Topics under the technical tracks were Freemind by Nel Patricio, OpenOffice by Mr. Glammoco C. Camora, GIT-Fast Version Control by Agi Rivera, OpenBTS GSM Simplified by Mark Quitariano, Lamp by Agi Rivera, PHP Framework by Rey Portugal and GIMP 101 by Lariz Santos. For business tracks: OpenERP by Erwin Galang, Embedded Asterisk by Meric Mara, Gnome 3.0 by Allan Caeg, Content Management System using WordPress by Allan De Guzman, Moodle-Open-Source Community-Based tools for Learning by Leandre Dacanay & Lawrz Libo-on, GnuCash by Iyen Magallanes, Open Source NAS/SAN by Renan Mara. Also, they got film showing of “Revolution OS” and the “Linux Install Fest” where attendees got the chance to experience how to install different Linux operating system like Ubuntu and KahelOS.

There were also technical competitions and games for everyone such as “Gimpscape Graphic Design Contest”, “PHP Programming Champ” and “Best Blog of the Day”. Participants got their chance to show their talents, creativity and skills. And there are prizes and goodies for participants too. I can say that this is one of the most generous event I've attended lately. Thanks to the sponsors who were very generous enough to support this endeavor.
Lots of giveaways, extreme prizes and souvenirs are given during the event. Again thanks to IBM Phlippines, PLDT, MSI-ECS, Intel Philippines, Imperium Technologies, ACER Philippines, Asterisk, BayanMuna Party-list, IdeaCorp, Techm8, APUG and Sysads.org for supporting Software Freedom Day 2010.
